My name is Joann and I am currently studying journalism as a graduate student at NYU. I graduated from the University at Buffalo in May of 2010 with a double major in communication and English and completed the Certificate Program for Journalism.

My love & practice of exploring, musing and writing are what makes me an exceptional journalist. I have been a writer and editor at both my undergraduate newspaper The Spectrum as well as at an undergraduate research journal Speakeasy. These experiences have lead to incredible opportunities–including interviewing Bill Nye, Harold Ford, and Anna Quindlen. I have also learned a lot covering various school events, meetings and tragedies, including the aftermath of the crash of Flight 1407. I have learned passion and patience always pay in the world of journalism.

My favorite moment was winning the Story of the Year for Feature Writing in 2007 after investigating the lack of sexual assaults reported at the University at Buffalo. I spoke to students, counselors, and the university chief of police about the skewed statistics which were not reflecting what was being reported outside the university.

I have grown as a journalist as much as the field has evolved in the time I have been in college trying to grasp it. I have embraced Twitter, blogs, and the immediacy of things now, but still have a lot to learn. I’m grateful for this aspect of the media.

I hope to eventually get a stable job doing what I love. I am currently enjoying being an intern at various places, getting on-the-job experience and meeting new people.

I am currently a web intern with O, The Oprah Magazine.
