“I’m interested in designing for posterity. People who buy McQueen are going to hand the clothes down to their children, and that’s very rare today.”

-Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen, eccentric and surrealist British designer, famously known for the wonderfully demented outfits exemplified in his recent Spring 2010 show was found dead in London home early this morning. The world of fashion has truly lost one of its visionaries.

During the showcase earlier this year, models looked nothing of this world as they sported a pair of tightly wound buns that look like giraffe ears, heavy metallic strangely angular shoes, and beautiful architectural glass-like dresses.

“This season everything from the science fiction imagery of H.R. Giger to photography of the Great Barrier Reef. While McQueen entitled this show ‘Plato’s Atlantis,’ it felt far more like an intergalactic space trip.” – Fashion Wire Daily reported in February 2010

The Cut blog and various other fashion news outlets speculated McQueen was surrounded by tragedy before he was found this morning in his London home–his mother died just a few days ago. McQueen also survived mentor Isabella Blow’s suicide in 2007.

A simple message on his official Web site behalf of Lee McQueen’s company states:
“ON BEHALF OF LEE MCQUEEN’S FAMILY, ALEXANDER MCQUEEN TODAY ANNOUNCES THE TRAGIC NEWS THAT LEE MCQUEEN, THE FOUNDER AND DESIGNER OF THE ALEXANDER MCQUEEN BRAND HAS BEEN FOUND DEAD AT HIS HOME. AT THIS STAGE IT IS INAPPROPRIATE TO COMMENT ON THIS TRAGIC NEWS BEYOND SAYING THAT WE ARE DEVASTATED AND ARE SHARING A SENSE OF SHOCK AND GRIEF WITH LEE’S FAMILY.

LEE’S FAMILY HAS ASKED FOR PRIVACY IN ORDER TO COME TO TERMS WITH THIS TERRIBLE NEWS AND WE HOPE THE MEDIA WILL RESPECT THIS.”
